After the critically acclaimed “Kaamos“, Finnish melodic death metallers AS THE SUN FALLS return from the frostbitten North with their most intimate and visceral work to date. The new EP, “Pohjoisen Sydän“, arrives May 23rd through Theogonia Records, and today the band unleashes its first single, “Luonto Ja Sydän” — a raw and melancholic glimpse into the wild heart of their homeland.
Rising from the icy shadow of “Kaamos“, “Pohjoisen Sydän” is a record born from soil, memory, and blood. Entirely in Finnish—with a haunting moment in Swedish, sung and performed by bassist Oskar Englund—the EP is a paean to Finland itself: its untamed beauty, its fractured traditions, and the eternal, complex relationship between the land and its people. This marks a new chapter for the band, with Joni Hakulinen making his recording debut as AS THE SUN FALLS‘ commanding new frontman.
“Pohjoisen Sydän is our most personal and grounded work to date,” says the band. “The music takes a slightly wilder turn than our previous releases—raw, direct, and melancholic, in the Finnish way. This wasn’t a stylistic choice as much as a necessity. The stories we tell demanded this sound.”
“Luonto Ja Sydän” is the pulse of the North itself — cold winds woven with mournful melodies and relentless riffs. It’s the embodiment of Finnish nature: beautiful, brutal, and unforgiving. The single channels themes of urbanization, emotional isolation, and the disintegration of ancient bonds with the land, all wrapped in a feral storm of melodic death metal majesty.
With “Pohjoisen Sydän“, AS THE SUN FALLS honors the unseen architects of Finnish resilience: soldiers, farmers, nurses, workers—every unsung soul who carved their lives into the harsh earth. Their legacy bleeds through each note and lyric.
